Story:

Haq offers a fictional version of a real story and a court judgment that shook the nation. It follows Shazia Bano, who fights for her rights after her husband stops supporting her following his remarriage and tries to silence her through instant triple talaq. Her legal battle sparks a national debate on women’s and minority rights.

Performances:

Yami Gautam delivers a powerful performance, expressing a wide range of emotions with grace and strength. She brings Shazia to life with great conviction. Emraan Hashmi plays his role with a mix of charm and quiet menace. He portrays a detestable character effectively, maintaining a firm and composed presence. Sheeba Chaddha, Vartika Singh, and Danish Husain also make a strong impact in their supporting roles.

What Works:

Director Suparn S Varma keeps the film focused on key social issues like gender equality, education, and minority rights instead of turning it into a melodrama or portraying women as helpless. The story highlights how certain conservative views can use religion and tradition to suppress women and maintain control. The second half features gripping courtroom sequences and thought-provoking dialogues, especially during the climax. Varma builds tension and emotion naturally, without overdoing it.

The production design and cinematography recreate the time period authentically, and the background score complements the tone beautifully.

What Doesn't Work:

The film does take some creative liberties, linking its story to real changes in Indian law and the Shah Bano case, something that may not please everyone familiar with the facts. The first half feels slow and rather ordinary until the second marriage scene, which adds momentum. Also, the neighbor character, shown as a typical male chauvinist, comes across as exaggerated in some scenes.

Haq Review and Verdict:

Haq is a well-made and important film directed by Suparn S Varma. It handles a sensitive subject with care and thoughtfulness, supported by Yami Gautam’s powerful performance and strong contributions from the rest of the cast. Despite a few shortcomings, the film leaves a lasting impact
