Story:

The son of Detective Jasmeet Bhamra, also known as Jass (Kareena Kapoor), dies in an open-firing incident by a psychopath in a foreign nation, leaving her grieving. She gets demoted to DS because she chooses to move far away from the life she and her son have created. When she is given the case of an Indian youngster who goes missing, it opens up a lot of trouble. She begins to suspect foul play as the investigation continues, especially in light of Diljeet (Ranveer Brar), the father of the missing child's apparent lack of honesty. How did the boy end up getting killed? Who is in charge of it? How does this murder escalate violence between two Indian communities? The remaining story is the answer to all these questions.

Performances:

Karenaa Kapoor has given a convincing performance as Jasmeet Bhamra. The role differs from her usual energetic and aggressive roles, and she adapted well to its requirements. Ranveer Brar and Ash Tandon were believable, while Prabhleen Sandhu showed great prowess despite having a shorter runtime. The English actors looked perfect and provided the required authenticity.

What worked for the film:

Hansal Mehta is predominantly known for his most famous web series, Scam 1992. The director also made critically acclaimed films like Aligarh and Shahid. With The Buckingham Murders, Mehta made a murder mystery for the first time. The movie tries to be as authentic as possible in showing the police procedural activities and never prefers its protagonist more than the story. Despite having an emotional connection with the case, the film's lead, Jass, never acts because of personal beliefs but only when her instincts allow her. For example, in a poignant scene towards the movie's end, a guy angrily declares that his partner is unworthy of being a mother. Jass gives the man a slap since she is aware of what it takes to be one. She works as an officer. She is a woman, though. She refuses to give a man the authority to decide what decisions women make.

What did not work for the film:

Though the film starts on a good note, it slows down after a while and never gets to the point, even at the midpoint. The second half has a comparatively better impact and twists. However, the issues like drug sales, stifling sexual preferences, covert extramarital affairs, obsessions, and a growing mistrust among queer individuals all these elements appeared like predictable traits and lacked the needed originality.

The Buckingham Murders Review and Verdict:

The Buckingham Murders benefits from Kareena Kapoor Khan's compelling performance. It also has some stunning reveals and layered characters. However, the narration could have been stronger and more coherent. Despite having the potential to be a captivating crime thriller, it ends up as ordinary fare.
