Peter Parker, aka Spider-Man (Tom Holland), is left confused after noticing unexpected changes in his body. At the same time, an invisible telepathic force begins attacking the Department of Damage Control (DDC) while searching for something called V-MAX. Who is this mysterious attacker targeting the DDC? What exactly is V-MAX? And how does Spider-Man protect it? The answers form the rest of the story.
Performances:
Tom Holland once again shines as Peter Parker/Spider-Man, delivering a sincere and convincing performance. He is particularly impressive in the emotional scenes. Although Zendaya has limited screen time, she leaves a good impression. Sadie Sink performs well in an important role, while Mark Ruffalo, Jon Bernthal, and Jacob Batalon are decent in their respective parts.
What Works:
The action sequences are undoubtedly the film's biggest strength. While the trailer hinted at several thrilling moments, the movie features only three major action set pieces. However, each one is executed brilliantly and leaves a strong impact.
The Spider-Man vs. Hulk sequence is visually spectacular, and the stylish fight scenes involving The Hand gang are equally engaging. Peter Parker's emotional struggle with loneliness is portrayed effectively, adding depth to his character. The backstory of Jean Grey is also well-written and blends nicely into the narrative.
What Doesn't Work:
The emotional track between Peter Parker and MJ starts on a promising note but gradually loses its impact. The screenplay lacks major twists, making several scenes predictable. The investigation into the mysterious telepathic force attacking the DDC is not explored convincingly enough, leaving several questions unanswered. The Hulk subplot also feels incomplete and could have been wrapped up in a better way.
Spider-Man Review and Verdict:
Director Destin Daniel Cretton attempts to deliver an emotional superhero adventure with Spider-Man: Brand New Day, and he succeeds for the most part despite a few flaws. Although the narration turns dull at several points in both halves, the film is elevated by its emotional moments, breathtaking action sequences, and Tom Holland's committed performance. Fans of the franchise are likely to enjoy this entertaining superhero outing.
