Santosh (Viraj Ashwin) and Vaishali (Yashashri Rao) have been in love since their school days. After convincing Vaishali's strict father, a school headmaster, they finally get their marriage fixed. However, before the wedding, Santosh meets with an accident during a trip to Goa with his friends and loses his memory. How does he regain his past? What challenges do his friends face in helping him remember? The rest of the series revolves around these questions.
Performances:
Viraj Ashwin delivers a convincing performance in the lead role. Gopi, Viva Raghav, and Siddu bring great energy to the screen, making their friendship feel natural and relatable. Though her role is limited, Yashashri Rao leaves a pleasant impression. Priyadarshini Ram also performs well. Anish Kuruvilla, Goparaju Ramana, Rohini Hattangadi, Shivannarayana, and the child actors all play their parts effectively, adding authenticity to the story.
What Works:
In recent times, several OTT shows have targeted 90s kids, and Gurthukostunnayi also embraces that nostalgic backdrop. While the story itself is fairly simple, director Vinod Gali presents it with warmth and sincerity, making it an enjoyable watch.
The school-day episodes and the present-day moments shared by the group of friends are packed with humor and heartfelt emotions. Their chemistry is one of the biggest strengths of the series. The memories associated with the grandmother's house are portrayed beautifully, adding an emotional touch that many viewers will relate to. The climax stands out with an effective twist and delivers a satisfying yet emotional ending that leaves a lasting impact.
What Doesn't Work:
The opening episodes which establish the love story and Hero's character fail to generate enough interest. The series truly finds its rhythm only after the friends become the central focus. A few scenes feel repetitive, and Santosh's medical condition could have been explored with greater clarity and depth.
Gurthukostunnayi Review And Verdict:
Despite its familiar storyline and a slightly slow-paced beginning, Vinod Gali's Gurthukostunnayi succeeds with its charming performances, enjoyable comedy, and emotionally satisfying climax. The web series may not be groundbreaking, but it is a pleasant watch.
