Deva Poster

Movie: Deva
Rating:2.5/5
Cast: Shahid Kapoor, Pavali Gulati, Pravessh Rana, Pooja Hegde, Girish Kulkarni, Kubbra Sait and Others
Director: Rosshan Andrrews
Produced By: Zee Studios, Roy Kapoor Films
Release Date: January 31, 2025

Story:

The film tells the story of Dev Ambre (Shahid Kapoor), a police officer who met with an accident just when he found a cue for the murder of his friend, and fellow police officer Rohan D Silva (Pavail Gulati). The rest of the film is about how Deva regains his memory and finds the killer.

Performances:

Shahid Kapoor performed perfectly as Dev Ambre and he is the biggest plus point for this movie. Pavail Gulati was good and Pravessh Rana made his presence felt. Pooja Hegde's character was poorly written and she barely had any scope to perform. Girish Kulkarni, Kubbra Sait, and others were just okay.

What worked for the film:

As said above, the performance of Shahid Kapoor works well for the film. The no-nonsense attitude and the intensity/swiftness in the action sequences were maintained by him. The initial moments of the film, and a few scenes between Deva, and Rohan were good.

What did not work for the film:

Deva is a remake of Mumbai Police, this suspenseful action thriller builds tension and excitement leading to a dramatic conclusion in the third act. To be frank, this is what benefited the Malayalam original, as it gives proper acknowledgment to the entire film through its intense climax. Director Rosshan Andrrews tried to give a different reason for the twist in this remake, and though his idea was good, the execution fell flat.

Pooja Hegde's character and scenes could have been the game changer for his movie and the effect of the final twist would have been bigger. However, her character does not have the required effect and just appears here and there. Also, the director completely forgot to use some crucial characters. For example, where was the man who swore to kill Deva for aiming a firearm at his wife? Where was the politician who openly warned Deva that he would not tolerate any public humiliation? One cannot help but wonder how the director conveniently abandoned the main character's condition and its link with the other characters. As said above, the Climax could have been a stunner, but by the time it arrived, it barely had the required impact.

Deva Movie Review and Verdict:

Even though the film includes some engaging scenes and action sequences, it struggles with an inconsistent and uneven narrative. The climax that resonated in the original cannot evoke the same stunning effect.
