Story:

Director Anuraj Manohar's film 'Narivetta' is inspired by the 2003 Muthanga incident, which resulted in fatalities following a confrontation between police and the Adivasi community.

Performances:

Tovino Thomas shines in 'Narivetta,' particularly in the police versus Adivasis standoff scene near the end. Suraj Venjaramood portrays the compassionate Basheer, convincing us that there are honest officers among the many corrupt ones. Cheran, a well-known director in Tamil cinema, takes on a morally ambiguous role. Although he is generally effective, his one-dimensional expression reduces the overall impact.

What worked for the film:

After an interesting beginning, the narration follows a non-linear structure, moving back and forth. After a while in the first half, the film gains speed from the moment the hero gets into the police uniform and never looks back. The political themes in 'Narivetta' are quite powerful. It reveals a corrupt police system and makes us uncomfortable with each selfish action they take. The moments leading up to the climax are impactful. The cinematography by Vijay is exceptional. Jakes Bejoy’s score adds tension in crucial scenes.

What did not work for the film:

The early parts of 'Narivetta,' which establish the world of the protagonist, start slowly as he is unhappy with his various jobs. Next, we see him in a romantic relationship with his girlfriend (Priyamvada Krishnan), who supports him. These parts give a bit of a dragged feel. Also, the film's second half, which has a tight screenplay for most of the parts, somehow misses the wow factor, especially after the hero decides to fight back. The key twists and turns are not that stunning.

Narivetta Review and Verdict:

In Narivetta, Anuraj Manohar depicts a true story in an original and sincere way. While the first half feels drawn out after a terrific start, the emotional intensity strikes from the interval, and the second half hits hard with a solid climax.
