Set in a village in the Godavari district, Raju (Sumanth Prabhas) works as an auto driver and enjoys life with his close friends, played by Sudarshan, Raj Kumar Kasireddy, and Viva Raghav. During this carefree phase of life, he falls in love at first sight with Maya (Nidhi Pradeep), an engineering student. Raju desperately tries to win her heart, and eventually, Maya accepts his love.
However, Maya’s father Shyam Babu (Jagapathi Babu), who works as a security guard, has a clear condition for his daughter’s marriage — he wants her to marry someone who earns more than him and can provide a stable future. Whether Raju and Maya’s love story gets a happy ending forms the rest of the film.
Performances:
Sumanth Prabhas delivers a decent performance and fits the role reasonably well. Nidhi Pradeep does justice to her limited character scope. Jagapathi Babu, despite not getting a role worthy of his stature, still manages to leave some impact with his screen presence.
Rajeev Kanakala and Devi Prasad are underutilized, while senior actress Laila is completely wasted in an insignificant role. The comedy track driven by Sudarshan works in a few scenes and manages to evoke some laughs, but for the most part, it fails to land effectively.
What Works:
A few comedy moments featuring Sudarshan genuinely entertain. The emotional scenes involving Jagapathi Babu, Sumanth Prabhas, and Nidhi Pradeep in the final half hour are not extraordinary, but they are fairly engaging and emotionally passable.
What Doesn’t Work:
At its core, Godari Gattupaina follows a familiar template by blending a father-daughter sentiment with a love story, a formula seen in countless films before. Unfortunately, the film sticks to an utterly routine narration without adding any freshness, making the screenplay feel weak and outdated.
Most of the comedy scenes involving Sudarshan, Kasireddy, and Raghav come across as silly and poorly written. Even the central love story between Raju and Maya fails to create any emotional connection because of awkward and unconvincing scenes. The film never clearly establishes what Maya sees in Raju, and the idea of love developing after a slap feels strange and unrealistic.
Just when the interval raises expectations of an interesting twist in the love story, the film quickly slips back into predictable territory. The second half suffers from a lack of strong emotional moments, impactful scenes, or engaging highs, turning the film into a routine and tiresome watch.
Verdict:
Godari Gattupaina had the potential to become a heartfelt romantic drama with a strong emotional core. However, except for a few decent moments, the film is dragged down by weak emotions, boring scenes, a love track that lacks magic, and music that fails to leave an impact.
