Story:

Daayra opens with DCP Raman Kumar (Prithviraj Sukumaran) and his team killing four criminals accused of rape in a shootout. The police claim that they retaliated only after the criminals attacked them and took away some of their weapons.

Amid mounting pressure from the Human Rights Department, a Special Investigation Team (SIT) is formed, with DCP Ajooni Kohli (Kareena Kapoor Khan) leading the investigation.

Did DCP Raman and his team really attack the criminals in self-defence, or was it a planned encounter? What does Ajooni discover during her investigation? The answers to these questions form the crux of the story.

Performances:

Prithviraj Sukumaran is convincing as DCP Raman Kumar and brings the required intensity to the character. Kareena Kapoor Khan gets a relatively underwritten role and could have done much more had the character offered greater scope.

Jitendra Joshi and Kshitee Jog are decent in their respective roles, while the rest of the cast is adequate.

What Works:

The first half of Daayra gets off to a promising start, with several effective moments. The non-linear narrative works reasonably well, as it gradually presents the police investigation and the SIT team's findings.

A couple of emotional moments involving the victim's family land well, while some dialogues and scenes highlighting the shortcomings of the system are effective.

The central conflict between instant justice and justice through the judicial system is an intriguing idea and gives the film a strong foundation.

What Doesn't Work:

The core idea of Daayra is certainly intriguing, but the screenplay gradually loses steam. The proceedings in the second half fail to maintain the momentum established in the first half.

The SIT investigation initially creates curiosity, but it eventually fails to uncover any major flaw or loophole in the police encounter. This makes the investigative track feel less impactful than it could have been.

The confrontation between Raman and Ajooni should also have received more attention. Their ideological differences had the potential to create compelling face-offs, but the film barely explores this conflict.

Unfortunately, the leads share only one brief significant interaction, and that too comes towards the end. As a result, the eventual payoff feels extremely weak.

Daayra Review and Verdict:

Daayra is made with a sincere intent, and Prithviraj Sukumaran's performance, along with a few effective dialogues and scenes, works in its favour. However, the underwhelming second-half screenplay, the failure to fully explore its intriguing premise, and a weak climax ultimately reduce the film to an ordinary affair.
