Story:

Set in the year 2040 in Chennai, the story revolves around an AI app created by S. J. Suryah’s character, Suriya, which determines whether two people are compatible in love. Vasu (Pradeep Ranganathan) falls in love with Dheema (Krithi Shetty), but the app declares that they are not a match. This pushes Vasu to challenge not only the app but also the very idea of love being decided by technology.

Performances:

Pradeep Ranganathan puts in sincere effort and tries to shine in every frame, but the character does not offer him enough scope, limiting his impact to a decent level. S. J. Suryah gets an underwhelming role and fails to deliver the required punch, except in a few fun moments. Krithi Shetty looks gorgeous, but her characterization is too weak and ineffective. Seeman, Gowri G. Kishan, Shah Ra, Yogi Babu, and the rest of the supporting cast are adequate in their roles.

What Works:

Director Vignesh Shivan succeeds in establishing the core concept well in the first half. The scenes that lead to the relationship between the hero and heroine are decent, even if they are not particularly memorable. The conflict that arises between them and causes them to drift apart is also handled fairly well. Anirudh Ravichander’s songs are decent, with Dheema Dheema standing out as the best part of the film.

What Doesn’t Work:

While the first half is fairly decent, the second half had the potential to take the film to the next level with its “heart is greater than the app” concept. Unfortunately, the director completely falters in taking the narrative forward in an engaging way, making the latter half feel tedious and stretched. Moreover, the villain’s character, played by S. J. Suryah, is reduced almost to a comic, Joker-like presence.

The biggest problem with the film is the complete lack of emotional connection in the love track. The contrast between the worlds of the hero and heroine is explored only at a very basic level, and the heroine’s character feels too silly and contrived. As a result, the audience struggles to connect with her, even during the climax.

LIK Review and Verdict:

Vignesh Shivan’s LIK comes with an interesting futuristic setup and offers a few entertaining moments that fit well within its world. The first half is fairly manageable and keeps the viewer engaged to an extent. However, the film loses its grip in the second half, where the narrative starts to drag with ineffective scenes and weak handling of the central conflict.
