Story:

Set in the coastal town of Kalingapatnam, Mandaadi revolves around Satta Puli (Suhas), who dominates the boat business in the region. He eliminates anyone who stands in his way and uses his influence to ensure that no other team from the village enters the boat races, allowing only his men to participate.

Amid a series of dramatic developments, Muthukali (Soori), who has been away from his village for several years, returns to challenge Satta Puli's dominance. He picks a group of youngsters who have no prior experience in boat racing, trains them, and takes them into the competition, taking responsibility for making them winners.

Who emerges victorious in the boat race? What happened between Muthukali and Satta Puli in the past? And what turned the two into bitter enemies? The rest of the story answers these questions.

Performances:

Soori delivers a mature and convincing performance as Muthukali. He completely owns the character, particularly in the emotional and action-heavy sequences, where his performance becomes one of the film's major strengths.

Suhas does well in a negative role and effectively brings the required intensity to his character. Mahima Nambiar is natural and convincing in an important role.

Veteran actor Sathyaraj gets a key part, but the character is not utilised to its full potential. Ravindra Vijay and the other supporting actors fit well into their respective roles.

What Works:

The first half largely maintains a steady flow. Although the narrative takes some time to pick up, the drama gradually builds as the individual sequences start falling into place.

The boat-racing episode is easily the film's biggest highlight. The emotional fight that follows adds further impact, and the first half ends on a strong interval high with the challenge between Soori and Suhas.

GV Prakash Kumar's songs are decent, while his background score is particularly effective. The cinematography also works well, especially in capturing the coastal setting and the racing sequences.

What Doesn't Work:

The second half takes a predictable route once the flashback begins. The story has several interesting elements, including love, selfishness, trust and the battle for dominance, but the execution fails to extract the required impact from them.

Most of the scenes feel predictable, often making it easy to anticipate what is going to happen next. As a result, the emotional weight of the flashback never reaches the desired level.

The final boat-racing episode is well-conceived on paper, but it fails to recreate the impact of the racing sequence in the first half. The episode also feels stretched for too long, which further affects the climax.

Mandaadi Review And Verdict:

Director Mathimaran Pugazhendhi attempts to deliver an intense rural sports action drama with Mandaadi. The core storyline has enough potential to make for an engaging film, and the first half largely makes good use of it.

However, the predictable second half, weak emotional impact and underwhelming climax prevent the film from reaching its full potential. The boat-racing sequences, Soori's performance and the first-half drama work well, but the film loses steam in the latter half.
