Story:
Dr. Mahima (Janhvi Kapoor) and ex-cricketer Mahendra (Rajkummar Rao) tie the knot in an arranged marriage, and they deeply bond with each other. As they navigate this unique circumstance, their shared passion for cricket brings them closer. In a surprising twist, Mahendra discovers his wife's hidden talent for the sport and becomes her mentor, encouraging her dream of becoming a cricketer.
Performances:
In terms of acting, Rajkummar Rao effortlessly excelled in this film. Throughout his career, he has taken on some of the most challenging roles, and Mr. and Mrs. Mahi is simply another stepping stone for him. He skillfully embodies a character who faces continuous ridicule and lives in constant fear because of his father before transforming into a dominant figure who releases his pent-up frustrations on his wife. Janhvi Kapoor was equally competent and delivered a commendable performance. She was exceptional in emotional sequences. Kumdu Mishra was good as the strict father, while Zarina Wahab makes her presence felt in a single scene.
What Worked For The Film:
Sharan and Nikhil Mehrotra have collaborated on a script that is built upon a solid foundation, resonating deeply with the audience. It strikes an immediate connection, as many individuals frequently find themselves pondering their career decisions and reminiscing about the dreams of their youth that were left unfulfilled. Though the love track between the Mahi Duo starts on a shaky note, it soon provides some beautiful moments with the help of lovely music. Also, the emotional turmoil between the lead pair is depicted well in the second half. The Cricket sequences are superbly picturized.
What Did Not Work For The Film:
Given the film's backdrop, there was a lot of scope to add humor to it, which the makers totally ignored. The film's simplistic nature works as a plus sometimes, but it also weakens the narrative. The father-son conflict could have been handled much better. The pace in the first half is slow until Mahindra makes a firm decision.
Mr and Mrs Mahi Review And Verdict:
Mr. and Mrs. Mahi is a neat entertainer with a narrative centered on the right things. The film's simplicity has both positive and negative aspects. The emotional impact in the second half is what sets this drama apart.
