The story of Kannappa revolves around Thinnadu (Vishnu Manchu), an atheist whose experiences drive him to become a legendary devotee of Lord Shiva.
Performances:
Vishnu Manchu takes on the lead role, and while his delivery and acting stumble at times, he really shines in the key moments of the second half. The strongest impact of the film comes from his suitable performance in the last act.
Preity Mukhundhan stars as Nemali and fits the part perfectly. She also adds to the glamor factor in songs. Mohan Babu, a legendary senior actor, has a special character in Kannappa, but his strong screen presence shines only in the climax.
Prabhas plays Rudhra, a character that lacks uniqueness. He looks sharp and fits the role, but he is greatly underutilized. Mohanlal too fits this description, making a cameo as Kirata during the pre-post interval parts.
Sarathkumar gets plenty of time on screen, and he totally matches the part. Akshay Kumar plays Lord Shiva, and Kajal Aggarwal appears as Goddess Parvati. Both are fine.
What worked for the Film:
The first episode of Thinnadu's Childhood introduces his lack of faith in God, shaping the film's atmosphere. Prabhas's entry and his scenes with Thinnadu and Mahadeva Shastri are decent, but not outstanding.
The film really shines in its final act, especially the climax. This is where the film excels in both writing and performance. The past two songs are great.
What did not work for the Film:
The film shows sincere intent but fails to create engaging drama around its key themes, like the importance of Vayu Lingam and the antagonist's cruelty, resulting in a flat sense.
The direction offers potential but doesn't deliver a unified effect. The narrative lacks suspense or proper intrigue, mainly because of the director, Mukesh Kumar Singh's casual style.
The film lacks the emotional and dramatic peaks needed to enhance the experience, even with its long runtime. Honestly, the romance portions of Thinnadu and Nemali are overdone and don't match up with the film's tone.
Kannappa Review and Verdict:
The latter parts of the second half of Kannappa showcase an emotional core, leading to a touching finale. On the flip side, the rest of the flick is pretty uneven and lacks any real punch. The genuine intent and the devotional songs enhance the film.
