Story:
Prabhu (Pavish) is a chef who meets his childhood friend Preethi (Priya Prakash Varrier) through a marriage alliance. They both like each other, but Prabhu decides to tell Preethi about his previous relationship when he receives the wedding invitation of his ex-girlfriend Neela (Anika Surendran). The rest of the film dives into what happened between Prabhu and Neela in the past and what is in store for them in the present.
Performances:
Pavish, the young actor, didn’t come off as a newbie at all, and he looked/acted exactly like Dhanush in a few moments. Anika Surendran was adorable and delivered her performance nicely, especially in the emotional parts. Priya Prakash Varrier is present only for a few scenes, and she was okay, while Mathew Thomas, who played the hero's friend, kept the audience entertained, though his characterization was too generic. Ramya Ranganathan was good. R. Sarathkumar, Saranya, and Adukalam Naren were apt.
What worked for the film:
In the trailer, Dhanush sets the stage by saying it’s just a typical story. Jaabilamma Neeku Antha Kopama follows a familiar plot of love, parental disapproval, and breakups. However, the screenplay manages to entertain for the majority of portions. Each episode is engaging, though not fresh. The film kicks off with Prabhu’s breakup, told from his perspective, making it a fun experience. While the love story between Prabhu and Neela doesn’t break new ground, the way it’s presented is appealing and has potential. Rajesh, a character played by Matthew Thomas, provides laughs even in the mundane portions of the second half. GV Prakash's music fits well into the film's mood.
What did not work for the film:
The playful vibe of the film starts to feel a bit off as the movie goes on. The second half feels predictable after a while, and when it’s time to bring the fun to a close, Dhanush rushes through things. The film already has more than enough love stories, but he throws in another one just to keep the plot moving. The pre-climax gives a feel of an emotional ending, but the climax turns out to be too random only to give a lead for the second part, which one does not know will be made or not. Also, Sarath Kumar’s role feels pretty standard and doesn’t offer much new.
Jaabilamma Neeku Antha Kopama Review and Verdict:
Jaabilamma Neeku Antha Kopama is an entertaining film that works for most of the parts. While the serious tone is lessened, the film continues to hold interest, but the ending feels silly. Pavish and Anikha Surendran perform well, whereas Matthew Thomas stands out in the friend character. GV Prakash's music enhanced the overall experience of the proceedings.
