Story:

Dasaratha Ramam (Samuthirakani) is a straight-up honest registrar officer. He doesn’t take bribes and stands as a true example of integrity, never giving in to temptation. On the other hand, his son Raghava (Thanraj) is a bit of a free spirit, wandering around without a care. Ramam raises his son with honest intentions and love, but Raghava never listens to his father and does not care about settling in life. After a few incidents, Raghav gets more rigid and makes a shocking decision to get a job/living. What is that decision? Did Raghava stand on his word? What attempts does Ramam make to make his son's wish true? The answers to these questions form the rest of the story.

Performances:

Samuthirakani really nailed the role of Dasharadha Ramam. He’s totally in his element with these kinds of characters, so it came naturally to him. From start to finish, he was impressive, especially during the climax where he really tugged at the heartstrings. Dhanraj also did a good job as Raghava, showcasing a range of emotions from being innocent to cunning and even villainous.

Pramodini had a solid role as a mother, and she delivered a fine performance, especially in the emotional moments. Satya brought some laughs as the hero's friend. Harish Uthaman suited the character and did a neat job. Sunil did not get a great part, while 30-year-old Prithvi was just present.

What worked for the film:

The main point of the film is that it is super sensitive and a bit risky. It needs a delicate yet compelling screenplay to reach the goal. In this regard, actor-turned-director Dhanraj was successful only in parts. The moments before the intermission and the way Raghava's character shows the evil touch even after a major incident make one intrigued about the proceedings. The scenes towards the climax work well.

What did not work for the film:

Though the film's plot has great potential, the taking is pretty standard. The bonding between the father and son was not shown properly. Why Raghava becomes so evil is not justified, and even the redemption of him becomes not so effective because of the weak handling of his character. Also, when and how the father and son drifted apart so far was also not shown. Instead of hanging around with unnecessary love scenes and some filler scenes, the director could have concentrated on showing the moments between father and son.

Ramam Raghavam Review and Verdict:

Ramam Raghavam is a well-intended family drama that has a shocking conflict point. The director rightly managed certain parts of the second half and climax, with #samuthirakani showcasing a noteworthy performance. Still, the film fails to convey its message effectively, hampered by a shaky beginning and unimpressive character development.
