Story:
Neeraj (Jim Sarbh), a powerful businessman, plans to gain the new oil reserves in the Bay of Bengal by bribing politicians with one lakh crore rupees. He recruits Deepak, a former CBI officer, to discreetly distribute money to politicians. What brought Deva, a beggar, and Deepak together? Who is Sameera? Did Neeraj get the oil reserves? Why did an ex-CBI officer collaborate with a corrupt businessman? The answers to the above-mentioned questions wrap up the story.
Performances:
Dhanush delivers an outstanding performance as Deva. His expressions and body language portray perfectly and innocence of the character. Nagarjuna portrays a morally complex character dealing with inner conflict. He captures it with subtlety and precision. Her character may be weak, but Rashmika Mandanna still performs decently.
Jim Sarbh excels as the main villain, and Dalip Tahil, Sayaji Shinde, Sunaina, Divya Dekate, Koushik Mahata, Saurav Khurana, and others fit perfectly.
What worked for the Film:
Sekhar Kammula, famous for his romantic films, ventures into crime drama with a financial scam theme.
The movie has a slow beginning. The initial 15 to 20 minutes of the film move slowly. And then, Dhanush enters as a beggar. His look and acting in the first scene catch the audience off guard while instantly appealing to them.
Sekhar Kammula brilliantly reveals the backstories of three beggars through montage shots alone. The audience engages with Deva and his fellow beggars, wanting to protect them from danger. Several powerful moments increase the speed, and even though the interval fight lags, it remains impactful.
Strong emotional scenes in the second half keep viewers invested in Deva's journey. Some crucial conversations between Deva and Sameera, and another important moment between Deva and Deepak also works well. The Pre-Climax boosts the film's intensity and achieves its goal.
Devi Sri Prasad's music stands out in the film. His amazing background score enhanced many sequences. The songs fit seamlessly into the film. Niketh Bommireddy delivers top-notch cinematography. His camera beautifully showcased both the rich and poor sides of Bombay.
What did not work for the Film:
Boring sections at the start and pre-interval act as obstacles to the story. The latter part has a few redundant scenes that could be removed. The climax falls short, as it fails to carry the pre-climax's momentum.
Kuberaa Review and Verdict:
Sekhar Kammula's Kuberaa provides a creative plot and meets expectations. Despite a few pacing problems and logic gaps, the engaging drama and emotions deliver a satisfying experience.
