Hrudhay (Atharvaa) is a shy and reserved young man who grows up under the care of his maternal uncle (Natarajan "Natti" Subramaniam). From childhood, he struggles to express his feelings. During his school days, he falls deeply in love with Samantha (Preeti Mukundan) at first sight. However, his inability to confess his love makes him lose her.
Later, he falls for Amudha (Kayadu Lohar), the friend of his best friend Sachin's (Thaman) girlfriend (Niharika NM). Once again, his hesitation prevents him from expressing his feelings, and Amudha also drifts away from him. Years later, Hrudhay gets engaged to Aditi (Malavika Mohanan).
Did Hrudhay finally get married as planned? Did his past love stories return to change his life? Most importantly, did he learn to express his heart? The rest of the film answers these questions.
Performances:
Atharvaa delivers a convincing performance in a role that goes through multiple stages of life. Be it as a school student, a teenage lover, or a successful company owner, he fits naturally into every phase of the character.
Preeti Mukundan and Kayadu Lohar impress not only with their screen presence but also with their performances. Although Malavika Mohanan has limited screen time, she leaves a strong impression.
Music director Thaman makes a pleasant return to the screen as an actor after many years and performs well. However, using another artist for his dubbing voice feels slightly distracting. Natti, Niharika NM, and the supporting cast perform their roles effectively, while Fahadh Faasil makes a delightful impact in his guest appearance.
What Works:
Director Aakash Bhaskaran draws inspiration from Hrudayam, the blockbuster starring Murali that became a sensation nearly 26 years ago. He smartly uses the classic song "Oosulade Oka Jabilata" at a crucial moment, which adds to the nostalgic appeal.
While the core story is familiar, the narration keeps the film engaging for the most part. The 1990s and early-2000s backdrop is recreated well, adding warmth and nostalgia. The childhood episodes and the friendship scenes generate good laughs and provide entertaining moments.
The director handles both love stories with sincerity, and Thaman's songs and background score effectively enhance the emotional moments, making the romantic scenes more impactful.
What Doesn't Work:
The pacing feels slow in several portions across both halves. Apart from one or two moments, the screenplay offers very few surprises. The love track between Atharvaa and Kayadu Lohar could have been developed with stronger emotional depth to make it more convincing.
Hrudhayam Murali Review And Verdict:
Hrudhayam Murali is a pleasant and enjoyable romantic entertainer despite its routine storyline. Director Aakash Bhaskaran blends romance, comedy, emotions, and nostalgia effectively to deliver a feel-good experience. Though the screenplay slows down at times and lacks major surprises, the engaging narration, heartfelt moments, music, and performances make it a satisfying watch.
