Story:
Set against the backdrop of the 1971 war, the film highlights the bravery of the Indian military during the conflict with Pakistan. It follows Nirmal Jit Singh Sekhon (Diljit Dosanjh), Major Hoshiar Singh Dahiya (Varun Dhawan), and Lt. Cdr. Mahendra S Rawat (Ahan Shetty), who serve in different sectors of the armed forces. Alongside their former trainer Lt Col Fateh Singh Kaler (Sunny Deol), they face Pakistani threats across Rajasthan, Punjab, and Jammu & Kashmir.
Performances:
As expected, Sunny Deol delivers the most impactful performance, commanding the screen with ease. Varun Dhawan shines in a subtle yet emotional role, while Diljit Dosanjh balances lively moments with serious ones. Ahan Shetty is decent in his part. Mona Singh feels natural, and Sonam Bajwa, Anya Singh, and Medha Rana fit well into their roles.
What Works:
The film’s intent is clear from the opening scene, and it blends patriotic energy with emotional depth. The backstory in the first half, focusing on the friendship between the three leads, works well and builds a strong bond. The portrayal of soldiers’ families living in fear of losing loved ones is effective. Director Anurag Singh deserves credit for handling Fateh Singh’s trauma over his son’s tragic past with sensitivity. The war sequences in the second half deliver the required highs, and the music complements the narrative smoothly.
What Doesn’t Work:
Despite its strengths, Border 2 suffers from some predictable proceedings that are easy to guess. Some portions feel stretched, and the VFX is disappointing, especially in the water and air combat scenes, which lack the visual punch needed for such sequences.
Border 2 Review and Verdict:
Anurag Singh delivers a proper patriotic drama with Border 2. The movie keeps viewers hooked throughout its entirety, featuring a reasonably effective screenplay and convincing acting/emotions, even if it occasionally drags and the VFX falls short of perfection.
