Story:
Arjun Acharya (Akshay Kumar), the son of a theologian (Jisshu Sengupta), inherits his grandfather’s grand yet eerie ancestral palace in rural Mangalpur. Seeing it as a way to clear his debts, he also plans to host his sister’s wedding there. Despite repeated warnings from locals about a curse and a ghost that targets brides, Arjun ignores them due to his circumstances. What follows is the mystery behind the palace’s past and the strange, unsettling incidents Arjun experiences.
Performances:
Akshay Kumar is in his element, excelling in comic scenes while also handling key emotional moments with ease. The trio of Paresh Rawal, Asrani, and Rajpal Yadav delivers plenty of laughs, while Rajesh Sharma is decent in his role. Tabu, Wamiqa Gabbi, Mithila Palkar, and Jisshu Sengupta have limited scope and are underutilized.
What Works:
As a horror-comedy, Bhooth Bangla tries to recreate the charm of Priyadarshan and Akshay Kumar’s earlier collaborations. The first half moves smoothly and, despite its predictability, offers good entertainment along with an engaging touch of folklore. While the interval twist isn’t particularly strong, it does spark curiosity. The second half has a few effective emotional moments, and the climax is satisfactory.
What Doesn’t Work:
The second half shifts into a more emotional mystery, which adds some depth but fails to rise above its predictable nature. It lacks genuine surprises and never fully grips the viewer. The folklore, though initially intriguing, unfolds routinely and misses the expected intensity and thrill.
Bhooth Bangla Review and Verdict:
Priyadarshan’s Bhooth Bangla sets out to deliver a proper horror-comedy and succeeds, though it takes the regular route, with its own share of pros and cons.
