Story:
The plot revolves around a medical college campus. A bungalow that has remained locked for 15 years undergoes repairs and is repurposed as a boys' hostel. However, the hostel's fourth floor houses a mysterious room numbered 418. Rumors circulate that any female or girl who enters that room or even sets foot on the hostel premises never returns. The narrative kicks into gear when a newly joined college student is allotted room number 417, right next to this suspicious, locked chamber. What is the true connection between room 418 and the eerie occurrences on campus? Is there a scientific explanation behind it, or are supernatural forces at play? That forms the core of the story.
Performances:
Chaithra J Achar, playing a vital role in the film, does complete justice to her character. She captivates the audience with her expressive performance. Ramesh Indira delivers an impactful act, while Surya Raj Veerabathini, Charan Lakkaraju, Preethi Pagadala, Shashank Patil, and the rest of the ensemble cast perform adequately within their given screen time.
What Works:
Debut director Kirtan Nadagouda chooses a fresh backdrop for this horror concept and attempts to build atmosphere, fear, and intrigue around it.
The first half keeps you engaged to an extent with its medical college setting, the mystery surrounding the locked room, and unexplainable occurrences beyond science.
The isolated setting, a building locked for 15 years, and local urban legends successfully create an unsettling sense that something dark is waiting to be uncovered.
Though the narration feels sluggish in parts, a few well-executed sequences toward the interval build curiosity for what lies ahead in the second half.
What Doesn't Work:
The flashback sequence, which should have been the emotional and terrifying core of the film, starts well but quickly loses steam and turns uninteresting.
While the director tries to create disturbing moments, the lead character’s behavior feels illogical, and the reasons for her psychological decline come across as overly simplistic. As a result, her actions lack genuine shock value or terror.
The pre-climax and climax attempt to pull off twists, but the dragged screenplay undermines the tension.
The final twist in the closing scene feels completely disconnected, almost undoing the setup established earlier in the story.
418 Review And Verdict:
418 The Film had the potential to be a standout horror thriller. While the strong atmospheric setup in the first half, solid sound design, and Chaithra J Achar's fine performance offer some redeeming moments, the film ultimately fails to deliver due to a weak flashback, slow pacing, lack of genuine scares, and a disappointing climax.
