Story:

An aspiring filmmaker arrives in Garividi, Vizianagaram, along with a friend, hoping to learn about the life of Reddy Vijaya Lakshmi (Anandhi), popularly known as Garividi Lakshmi, a folk singer. His journey begins after a producer points him in her direction. However, he soon discovers that several women in the region share the same name, making his search far more challenging.

As he meets different people and pieces together her story, he learns about the struggles, setbacks, and triumphs she faced while pursuing the rare folk art of Burrakatha. The rest of the film revolves around whether he eventually manages to find the real Garividi Lakshmi and uncover her inspiring journey.

Performances:

Anandhi delivers an impressive performance in the lead role. She effortlessly captures Lakshmi’s curiosity, determination, and emotional struggles, bringing depth to her character whenever the story demands it.

Rag Mayur is equally effective in a key role, while Naresh once again showcases his acting prowess in a supporting part. Raasi, L. B. Sriram, Srinivas Avasarala, Ankit Koyya, Shakalaka Shankar, Sharanya Pradeep, Kancherapalem Kishore, Nithin Prasanna, Viva Raghava, and others fit their respective roles well.

What Works:

Director Gowri Naidu Jammi deserves appreciation for the sincerity behind his attempt to tell this story. Garividi Lakshmi gradually picks up momentum around the interval and begins to follow the path the director has envisioned.

The film effectively portrays how Lakshmi transformed the traditional art of Burrakatha with her own distinctive style and won the hearts of audiences. The sequences featuring folk songs and Burrakatha performances are particularly engaging and stand out as some of the film’s most enjoyable moments.

Several emotional sequences in the second half also work well, adding depth to Lakshmi’s journey. The film’s final moments leave a lasting impression, bringing a sense of emotional weight to the story.

What Doesn't Work:

The first half falls short of expectations in terms of storytelling and pacing. Scenes depicting Lakshmi’s childhood, her growing passion for singing, the hardships she faces because of her parents, and the emotional turmoil following her early marriage and separation are presented rather briefly. As a result, these important phases of her life do not make the impact they should.

The portions showing her learning folk songs and mastering Burrakatha could have been more engaging and detailed. Moreover, the rise-and-fall moments typically associated with a biographical drama remain largely predictable, offering few surprises.

Garividi Lakshmi Review And Verdict:

Garividi Lakshmi, directed by Gowri Naidu Jammi, is a sincere and commendable attempt to bring an inspiring folk artist’s life to the big screen. While the ordinary sequences in the first half and a few predictable tropes slow down the narrative, Anandhi’s excellent performance, the music, the emotional depth of the second half, and a fitting climax hold the film together.

Despite its shortcomings, the film succeeds in highlighting the journey of a woman who made a traditional folk art her own. Garividi Lakshmi may not be consistently engaging, but its sincerity, performances, and emotional core make it a worthwhile watch.
