Story:
Victor (Ishaan Shoukath), a visually impaired man, meets a tragic end at the hands of a ruthless industrialist's son, sparking chaos within a vast gold syndicate. Determined to achieve justice for the wrongs done, Marco (Unni Mukundan), Victor's adopted brother, pledges to take vengeance on those responsible. Marco's toughest struggle lives nearer than he understands, as his rivals are concealed among his acquaintances. The film's core narrative revolves around how Marco navigates these challenging situations.
Performances:
Unni Mukundan is too good in the title role, Marco. He exhibits perfectly the required body language in action sequences, and he also impresses in a few emotional scenes. Ishaan Shoukath was appropriate in a crucial character and makes one feel for his character's end. Jagadeesh, Siddiqui, Abhimayu Thilakan, and Kabir Duhar Singh were apt.
What worked for the film:
Marco, directed by Haneef Adeni, presents a simple narrative against a new setting for Malayalam cinema. At its heart, the film delivers a gripping narrative that is unrestrained and filled with gore. The initial sequence captivates and sets a perfect frame of mind for the rest of the film. The family scenes are not great, but they do a good job of establishing the bond between Marco and his brothers. The pre-Interval sequence and the first fight in the second half along with the death of a crucial character, work well for the film. The Climax episode could have been better, but still, it has the required impact. Ravi Basrur's background score suits the mood of the film
What did not work for the film:
Though the film establishes the violent quality from the beginning itself, it turns overboard at times. One can digest all the gore in the film, but the way the director showed violence in the Pre-Climax episode was too brutal. Any normal movie viewer will be taken aback by that sequence. Moreover, the family sentiment angle, which appears decent at the initial stage, does not continue to be in the same range and the emotional connect becomes affected by it.
Marco Review and Verdict:
Marco is a relentless and unapologetic action movie. From the very first frame, the story establishes a harsh atmosphere. The well-built violent action moments happen at regular intervals and benefit the film, but the unnecessary bloodshed, especially right before the climax, detracts from its effectiveness.
