Story:
Laxman Utekar's movie Chhaava tells the story of Maratha King Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj, who is the son of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, and his conflicts with Mughal Emperor Aurangzeb, along with his fights against the Mughals.
Performances:
Vicky Kaushal totally nails the role of Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj, and his performance really ramps up in the climax. He was super convincing during the fight scenes. Even though Rashmika Mandanna's part is short, she really makes it work. As Aurangzeb, Akshaye Khanna keeps the intensity high, while Ashutosh Rana, Divya Dutta, and Diana Penty shine in their roles.
What worked for the film:
This story is of historical importance, and the director executed the first half really well. The way they introduced the main character and showed the Mughal's thirst for revenge was spot on. The movie has tons of powerful lines that really highlight Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj and boost the film overall. The last thirty minutes show Sambhaji not giving in to his foes, no matter how much pain they inflict, and it's pretty powerful.
What did not work for the film:
The latter part of the film begins on an unsteady note and maintains that feeling for some time. The director could've cranked up the emotional intensity in the scenes that present the internal betrayals and conspiracies, which could have enhanced the narrative.
Chhaava Review and Verdict:
Chhaava honors the courage and sacrifice of Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj, who dedicated his life to the Maratha Empire and Swarajya. The film delivers an honest and emotionally charged story. Although it has some pacing issues and drags a bit in the second half, it finishes on an uplifting note.
