Story:

Mahima (Ulka Gupta), a heavily pregnant woman, shocks everyone by taking her own life. However, her spirit refuses to leave this world and continues to linger around. Even before Mahima’s death, her elder sister Mahadevi (Kamakshi Bhaskarla), a yogini, begins investigating the mysterious deaths that have occurred in their family.

Mahadevi eventually discovers that a dark supernatural force called Agadha is behind the tragedies haunting her family. The rest of the story revolves around how she takes on this evil force and attempts to put an end to its reign.

Performances:

Kamakshi Bhaskarla carries much of the film on her shoulders with a committed performance. She is convincing in the lead role and gives the film the required emotional weight. Ulka Gupta makes her presence felt despite having limited scope.

Among the supporting cast, Shravan Reddy, Jovika, Bhanu Chander and Vanitha Vijay Kumar fail to make much of an impact.

What Works:

Director MS Raju has chosen an interesting premise. Though the film does not generate intense suspense, the first half moves reasonably well as it gradually introduces the characters and the mystery surrounding the family.

Once Mahima’s backstory is revealed, the interval portions create curiosity about what is going to happen next. The climax, particularly the sequence where Mahadevi confronts and attempts to destroy Agadha, works fairly well.

What Doesn’t Work:

Despite having an intriguing premise, Agadha suffers from a slow and uneven narrative. The film had plenty of scope to turn Mahima’s backstory and the troubles faced by her lover and family due to the dark force into gripping, suspenseful sequences. However, most of these scenes are handled in a routine manner.

At several points, the film creates an expectation that something exciting is about to happen, only to follow it up with a weak or underwhelming scene. The basic approach is interesting, but the execution fails to sustain the suspense.

The film also does not explain Agadha’s origins or the extent and nature of its powers effectively. A stronger backstory and clearer detailing of the supernatural force could have added considerably more depth and impact.

Agadha Review And Verdict:

MS Raju’s Agadha attempts to present an intriguing supernatural mystery thriller and starts with a promising premise. The first half manages to hold attention, but the film loses momentum as it progresses and struggles with a slow, routine narrative. It picks up somewhat towards the climax, which works reasonably well. Overall, Agadha is an average watch with a good idea that deserved a more gripping execution.
