Story:

Sirai follows a police officer tasked with escorting a prisoner from Vellore prison to the Sivagangai court. During the long journey, the officer learns about the prisoner’s past, and the film explores the challenges they face along the way, ultimately leading to the prisoner’s fate.

Performances:

Vikram Prabhu delivers a restrained yet impactful performance, bringing depth to his role. Debutant Akshay Kumar convincingly portrays a vulnerable young man, shaken by sudden changes in his life but still fighting with inner strength. The standout, however, is Anishma Anilkumar, who gives a heartfelt performance as an emotional young woman who gradually finds the courage to fight for herself and her love.

What Works:

Unlike typical police dramas, director Suresh Rajakumari offers a grounded and honest look at the pressures and emotional struggles faced by lower-level officers. The opening sequence is gripping, and the scenes around the intermission are well-crafted. The emotional moments in the second half, particularly in the scene which involves the judge and the young couple are effective. A subtle twist near the climax adds the right amount of surprise and emotion.

What Doesn’t Work:

At times, the film slips into melodrama, especially during flashback sequences that feel predictable. The antagonist is too formulaic, and the pre-climax episode unfolds in a routine manner. Some supporting characters and their prejudiced views appear forced rather than natural. After a strong start, the first half slows down in places, affecting the overall pace.

Sirai Review Verdict:

Sirai stands out for its grounded storytelling and strong performances, especially from Vikram Prabhu, Akshay Kumar, and Anishma Anilkumar. While the film falters with predictable elements and occasional melodrama, it still manages to deliver the required emotional depth.
