Sanjay Viswanath (Suriya) is an Olympic shooting gold medallist and a wealthy businessman from an affluent family. Even after crossing 40, he remains unmarried and chooses to live alone. However, unable to bear his mother Nirmalamma's (Radhika Sarathkumar) pain over the family having no heir, Sanjay decides to have a son through surrogacy.
When his son Abhay develops a health issue, Sanjay meets his surrogate mother, Maddy (Mamitha Baiju), who comes to India along with him. As she spends more time with Sanjay, Maddy is drawn to his nature and kindness and eventually falls in love with him.
How does Sanjay respond to Maddy's proposal despite their nearly 20-year age gap? What challenges does their relationship face, and how does their love story unfold? That forms the rest of the story.
Performances:
There is little new to say about Suriya's acting abilities. He fits effortlessly into the role of Sanjay Viswanath and delivers a strong performance, particularly in the emotional scenes. His screen presence also adds considerable weight to the film.
Mamitha Baiju is equally impressive in a key role. Her natural performance and energetic presence give the film an added spark and make her one of its strengths.
Radhika Sarathkumar brings her experience to the role of the mother and makes the character convincing and memorable. Raveena Tandon has limited screen time but performs well in her brief appearance.
What Works:
Though Vishwanath & Sons begins on a slightly slow note, Venky Atluri gradually brings together entertainment and emotion in good measure. The scenes featuring Suriya, Radhika Sarathkumar and Mamitha Baiju generate several enjoyable moments. The chemistry between these three characters works particularly well and adds to the impact of their sequences.
The small twist involving Maddy and Sanjay creates interest in the second half. Venky Atluri also handles an emotional sequence early in the second half effectively. A few key scenes are handled well, while the climax, despite being simple, ends the film on a satisfying emotional note.
What Doesn't Work:
After starting the second half on a promising note, Venky Atluri's execution becomes somewhat uneven. The narrative gradually shifts its focus away from the love story and towards Sanjay's family.
The wedding portions set in Ooty have a routine feel, and the way Sanjay resolves the family issues is fairly predictable. A few stretches also lack the freshness and emotional impact seen earlier in the film.
Vishwanath & Review And Verdict:
Venky Atluri's Vishwanath & Sons is a feel-good family drama with its share of emotional moments and engaging sequences. While the first half benefits from Suriya - Mamitha Baiju and Radhika chemistry and well-balanced emotions, the routine portions in the second half and a few slow moments affect the overall flow, but still, some crucial moments work well, including the climax. Overall, Vishwanath & Sons is a reasonably engaging and emotional family drama that makes for a decent watch.
