Story:
Viduthalai 2 picks up immediately from the conclusion of the first film, depicting the arrest of Perumaal Master, portrayed convincingly by Vijay Sethupathi, by Police. The rest of the film is how he gets treated by the police along with his backstory which describes what made him an extremist/revolutionary leader from a simple school master.
Performances:
Vijay Sethupathi gave one of the memorable performances in his career as Perumal/Master. He is seen on screen for a larger part and made most of it. Soori did not get enough footage or scope to perform. Manju Warrier was fine, while Ken Karunas was impressive as Karuppan. Gautam Menon, Rajiv Menon, Chethan, Bala Hasan and other artists who appeared as police officers were fine.
What worked for the film:
Vidudhala 2 primarily explores the turbulent existence of Perumal, who undergoes a continuous cycle of learning and unlearning as he seeks to comprehend the ever-changing society that exhibits growing indifference. The initial sequences of the film work very well along with some well designed action sequences near the interval. The second half also has some impactful scenes where Perumal discusses societal issues and conflicts with the police team which accompanies him in a dense forest.
What did not work for the film:
The extensive duration dedicated to the backstory of Perumal and the conversational approach in the second half made it less organic and more preachy. One waits for the epic confrontation between Perumal and Kumaresan or Perumal with the Police officers. However, as mentioned above, though some scenes between Perumal and Police work, the narration gets dragged on after a point and never rises. All the problems and issues faced or told by Perumal are present in many films and the effort of presenting them in a fresh manner was missing. The climax of the film also does not come as effective as it should have been.
Vidudhala Part 2 Review and Verdict:
Vidudhala Part 2 is an honest but flawed take from Vetrimaaran. Similar to the first part, this film also focuses on oppression and police brutality. It opens with an intriguing episode, but things take a turn when the flashback starts. The interval episode is better, and the second half includes a few notable parts, but incorporating Vijay Sethupathi's backstory seems unnecessary. The film ends up on an unclear note
