Story:
Agnyathavasi takes place in the charming village of Nalkeri in Malenadu during the late 1990s. After 25 years, a crime occurs in the village, prompting the inspector and farmer (Rangayana Raghu) to investigate. The movie revisits the 1970s to uncover a different murder case. Are the two cases linked? Are they going to identify the real criminal? The rest of the movie answers the questions.
Performances:
Rangayana Raghu and Ravishankar Gowda shine with their exceptional performances. Raghu expresses a range of emotions, leading the film. Siddu Moolimani and Paavana Gowda made the most of their screen time. Ravishankar Gowda lands a role to showcase his talent and excels. Sharath Lohitashwa excels in his tough yet tender role.
What worked for the film:
The film evokes nostalgia by capturing the 70s and late 90s beautifully. Production design maintains the film's authenticity, capturing the Eastmancolor era vibe. The character development is well-defined. The latter part is fascinating, with revealing layers and a strong climax.
What did not work for the film:
In the first half, the Rashomon effect's non-linear narrative feels stretched rather than captivating. By trying to differentiate itself from standard crime dramas, the movie loses its high points and feels dull in parts.
Agnyathavasi Review and Verdict:
Janardhan Chikkanna's Agnyathavasi is a well-written thriller that gradually unveils everything. It can be boring in parts, but things really start to heat up later on. The visuals are superb, and the background score is also good, plus the performances are on point
