Story:

The movie starts with a little girl's sacrifice in Chandrapur, and then it jumps ahead 40 years. Ambika (Kajol) is living the good life with her husband Shubhankar (Indraneil Sengupta) and their daughter Shweta (Kherin Sharma).

They seem to have no desire to visit Chandrapur, the village where Shubhankar's roots are. His dad passing away pushes him to make a trip, and after some surprising twists, Ambika and Shweta head to the village three months later because Joydev (Ronit Roy), Shubankar's relative, insists they check it out since they're considering selling their family home. But Ambika does not know what is waiting for in Chandrapur

Performances:

Kajol makes her mark with a neat performance, regardless of her character's depth. Indraneil Sengupta performs well despite his brief role. Ronit Roy plays an important character but goes overboard. Kherin Sharma is fine.

What worked for the Film:

The film focuses on the tale of Goddess Kali and Raktabija. This blend of horror and mythology is intriguing. The first episode and early scenes of the demon are effective. The second half features exciting moments like the car chase and a twist from the first episode. The lead-up to the climax is strong.

What did not work for the Film:

The film takes a long time to establish the mood in the first half. No one will feel fear or get drawn into Chandrapur. The film aims to convey a powerful message about a mother's sacrifices for her children, but the core emotion gets lost in the typical plot.

The biggest drawback is the absence of emotional moments between mother and daughter. The villain receives an effective introduction, but his actions become predictable and lack surprises. The climax begins effective but lacks impactful moments for the main character.

Maa Review and Verdict:

Vishal Furia's Maa had the potential to be more powerful. Focusing on a mother's love battling dark forces, the film attempts to combine emotions and horror with mythology but falls short in coherence.
