Kannada actor and director Rishab Shetty is set to release his highly anticipated film, Kantara Chapter 1, in theaters on October 2, 2025. However, his speech in Kannada at the Telugu pre-release event held on Sunday, September 28, has triggered a heated debate on social media.
In recent years, there has been a rise in language-related controversies in Karnataka involving Kannada-speaking communities. Films like RRR, Radhe Shyam, and the recent OG starring Pawan Kalyan faced criticism from local activists and audiences for not releasing Kannada versions or for not promoting the films equally in Karnataka.
This ongoing tension has upset some Telugu movie fans. When they saw Rishab Shetty speaking in Kannada at a Telugu-language event, many took to social media to express their anger. Some even called for a boycott of the film and accused the team of disrespecting the Telugu language.
In response, Kannada-speaking netizens defended Rishab Shetty and shared old videos of Telugu actors, like Allu Arjun, speaking in Telugu at events held in Karnataka. They also pointed out that during the RRR event in Ballari, most of the speeches were in Telugu.
These online arguments show how sensitive language issues can be, and unfortunately, such conflicts often continue without resolution. But at the core, most Telugu movie lovers appreciate good cinema, no matter the language. The first Kantara film was a huge hit in the Telugu states, and many are still excited to watch Chapter 1.
True maturity lies in standing up against disrespect or hate toward one’s language or culture. But doing so respectfully and thoughtfully, not by spreading more hate or vague boycott calls.
