Bhaskaran (Pasupathy) is about to retire from his job at a government hospital. He must maintain a clean record so that he can use his pension money to pay for an expensive surgery needed by his grandson Rahul (Sai Saran), who is suffering from a serious medical condition. Meanwhile, his neighbour’s daughter, Mercy, goes missing, and the police suspect that she is the latest victim of a serial killer. The story then explores how this crime is connected to Bhaskaran and the challenges he faces in ensuring his grandson’s recovery.
Performances:
Pasupathy delivers a highly believable and convincing performance. Vidaarth is excellent, and his character develops well as the series progresses. Lakshmi Priyaa Chandramouli, as Esther, and Lizzie Antony, as Bhaskaran’s wife, also give strong performances.
What Works:
Written and directed by Selvamani Muliyappan, this Sony LIV series has a concept that is reminiscent of Suzhal and Maharaja. Crimes against young girls lead to shocking revelations that challenge ideas of guilt and punishment. The suspense around the identity of the killer is well maintained, and the twists are placed effectively. The emotional struggle faced by Bhaskaran and his wife is portrayed with depth, and the arc of the constable character is also engaging. The final twist at the end works well.
What Doesn't:
However, Kuttram Purindhavan suffers from some predictability. The village festival backdrop and the theme of sexual abuse of young girls feel familiar. The disturbing nature of the subject may also affect how viewers respond to the series. Additionally, the narration of the backstory and some key revelations could have been clearer.
Kuttram Purindhavan Review and Verdict:
Despite these issues, Kuttram Purindhavan succeeds as a crime thriller due to its strong performances and reasonably engaging screenplay. While the tone becomes repetitive at times and certain portions feel stretched, the series ultimately offers an engaging and thought-provoking experience.
