Story:
This is a story about how a gangster became powerful in the politically intense environment of Uttar Pradesh during the 1980s.
Performances:
Rajkummar Rao delivers a solid performance in the title role, Maalik, but his character does not have any specialty or effect that is required for a gangster drama. Manushi Chhillar is fine in her role, but it is way too predictable. Prosenjit Chatterjee, Saurabh Shukla, Rajendra Gupta, Anshuman Pushkar, and Saurabh Sachdeva are apt.
What worked for the film:
The initial build upto the hero's introduction is good. A few dialogues from the titular character work well at a few places. The interval episode is good and stands as the best part of the movie.
What did not work for the film:
Director Pulkit follows all the tropes of a classic gangster drama for Maalik, but though the style and intent are evident in his narration, the emotion goes completely missing. The raise of the Hero from a son of a farmer to a don is not shown at all. We just hear a few dialogues about his power, but what we see is him killing his opponents or persons he feels are a danger just like that.
The scenes that show the betrayal and loyalty angle and a family person landing in danger because of the hero's rivalry with villains all fall flat, as we never feel for the hero or his family/friends. Towards the end, the film becomes even more dragged out with a needless violent/bullet rain kind of fight, which adds zero impact.
Maalik Review and Verdict:
Pulkit's Maalik is a standard violent gangster story that fails to break new ground, aside from a few impactful parts. Despite Rajkummar Rao's convincing act, it falls flat.
