The Film Federation of India has officially announced the country’s entry for the 2026 Academy Awards, and after much speculation and debate, the Hindi film Homebound has been selected to represent India in the Best International Feature category.
Before the final decision, several Telugu films were under serious consideration, reflecting the growing influence of Tollywood on the national stage. The shortlist included Sankranthiki Vasthunnam, Pushpa 2, Kannappa, Gandhi Tatha Chettu, and Kubera, directed by Sekhar Kammula. Each of these films had made waves either commercially or critically, with Pushpa 2 especially drawing attention for its pan-India appeal and massive box office performance.
However, the selection sparked mixed reactions among moviegoers and netizens. Many expressed surprise that mainstream commercial entertainers dominated the shortlist, rather than more experimental or socially driven narratives. While fans of Telugu cinema were thrilled to see their favorite titles in the race, others felt the choices lacked the artistic depth typically associated with Oscar entries.
Homebound, a Hindi-language drama written and directed by Neeraj Ghaywan, is based on a New York Times article by Basharat Peer from 2020. Starring Ishaan Khatter, Vishal Jethwa, and Janhvi Kapoor, it follows two childhood friends who attempt to pass the national police exam
